Training

All driver training is FREE to Associate members of the Group.
(An annual subscription of £10 is payable on joining the Group).
Practical in-car training is carried out by one of the Group's qualified Observers who give their time freely to assist Associate members to pass the Advanced Driving Test. Tuition is usually given in the Associates own car apart from demonstration drives given by the Observer.

Most training sessions last for approximately one hour and are carried out at times convenient to both the Observer and Associate.

All our Observers have passed the Advanced Driving Test and hold either Gold or Silver grades. Two of our Observers have also passed RoSPA's Diploma in Advanced Driving Instruction.

During an Observed run the following aspects of driving skill are covered --

Use of Controls

  1. Steering
Used smoothly, with good control and at the correct time.
  2. Clutch
Used smoothly, with good control and at the correct time.
  3. Gears Brakes
Used smoothly, with good control and at the correct time.
  4. Accelerator
Used smoothly, with good control and at the correct time.
  5. Observation
  6. Planning
  7. Anticipation and Hazard Awareness

Another important aspect of Advanced Driving is the Associate's use of
"The System of Car Control"
as described in "Roadcraft" the Police Drivers Manual. We recommend that all Associates obtain a copy of this book before embarking on a course of tuition.
This book is available from all good bookshops priced £13.99 (ISBN 0.11.3490858.7).

The Test
The RoSPA Advanced Driving Test is regarded as the most comprehensive and challenging available to the public.

A RoSPA "Gold" pass is the highest civilian driving standard available and the holder will be a master of his or her art.

All our examiners will have had considerable experience of many types of vehicle at Police Advanced level and many are or have been Police Driving Instructors.

Because we want you to maintain the highest standard we ask that you retake the test every three years. The test itself includes a drive lasting about one hour over a route covering a wide variety of traffic conditions. Immediately on completion of the test the candidate is awarded a Gold, Silver or Bronze pass.

In the unlikely event of a fail then the test can be retaken free of charge. All candidates receive a comprehensive written report on all aspects of their test.
